New album out: the contemporary fortepiano
After four years of experimenting, conversations with instrument builders and the researching of repertoire, we proudly present to you our new album: The Contemporary Fortepiano
On this album we play new music on historical instruments. With our line-up of fortepiano, violone and Whisper Kit we have created a totally new sound over the past few years. It is a sound that reflects perfectly our love for jazz, European Early music and art music from the Middle East.
The Acoustic Ambition
This music is all about intimacy of sound. In our quest for a light and transparent sound we very naturally arrived at the instruments on this album. Rembrandt Frerichs plays a fortepiano, the predecessor to the modern grand piano. This one is a copy of a 1790 Walter model, like the instrument Mozart had in his home. The Netherlands National Musical Instrument Fund (NMF) had this instrument built specially for Rembrandt by the famous Belgian piano craftsman Chris Maene.

MA festival Brugge: composition assignment
The MA festival Brugge, one of the charming European festivals for Early Music, has given me a composition assignment to write something new, to the inspiration of Gustav Klimt's 'Beethoven Fries'. It's a challenge to bring together many different worlds, but as l' bringing cellist Benjamin Glorieux and saxophonist Sylvain Rifflet to team up with the trio, l feel we can create something unique on the festival.

In our concertseries called Made in Europe, where we celebrate European jazz, it's now time to feature Spain. Perico Sambeat l knew from his collaborations with Brad Mehldau. Now that Cairo hosts a nice Jazz festival, l;m super happy with the invitation to come back to the festival. This time l'll play with Hermine Deurloo, Tony Overwater and Joost Lijbaart.

The concerto, bering played at the finals, will be broadcast live at Dutch national radio 4.
recording with early music improvising allstars
My Fiancée (soprano Klaartje van Veldhoven) and l will actually record an album together! We both believe that that should be much more improvisation in the world of classical music, and with our new album coming up, called Normal Gets You Nowhere, we point in the musical direction where we feel we want to go. a team of Early music musicians and improvisers will create a fresh album. We'll play with Erik Bosgraaf, Antoinette Lohmann, Bert van den Brink, Soren Leopold and the Rembrandt Frerichs Trio
Recording with Kayhan Kalhor
After having played in 2013 for the November Music carte blanche l got, and doing a couple of concerts in 2014, both the Rembrandt Frerichs trio and Iranian Kamancheh player Kayhan Kalhor felt is was time to record a first album together. We have recorded this new album in Germany and are looking forward to the release very much. l brought to the studio my Fortepiano and harmonium,Kayhan brought both his Kamancheh and the new 'Shah Kaman'. Tony can be heard on his Violone and acoustic bass. having listened to Kayhan's music on the ECM label quite a lot, l can say it's a joy to hear us play together on this recording.

Rembrandt in 14 museums
What? 30 seconds is the average amount of time museum visitors spend in front of works of art?
The Rembrandt Frerichs trio has created a series of concerts in art museums.
At these concerts a direct relationship is established between the music and the artworks in such a way that the audience perceives both the paintings and the music from a more profound perspective.
For the art of the trio the trio plays music specifically written and improvised for the works of art present in the museums hosting the concert. A concert set-up is made in the museum halls, among the art. Audiences are invited to experience the music, the art and the museum space in a new way. The trio will do this in their Contemporary Fortepiano – line up, playing the historic fortepiano (Mozart’s instrument), historic violone and historic percussion-set: new music on old instruments.

ending and beginning of season at the Concertgebouw.
For me this summer, the holidays are bordered by two concerts at the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. My last concert before the holiday is on July 31st, when l'll play in duo with Hermine Deurloo for the Robeco series at the Koorzaal, 20:00 & 21:30. after summer, we'll be back with the Rembrandt Frerichs trio opening at the Concertgebouw again our season on August 30th.
see you there!
carte blanche at tivoli vredenburg coming up.
in 2015-2016 l have a carte blanche at the concerthall Tivoli Vredenburg. l was invited to play three concerts, where together with classical colleagues we'll go on adventure in each other's music and repertoire. We'll start up the series with a trio concert on saturday october 3rd. the second concert is together with violinist Liza Ferschtman on friday february 5th. The third concert will be around the passion season, when we trow an early music party, when the Rembrandt Frerichs trio invites Erik Bosgraaf, Klaartje van Veldhoven and Mike Fentross to the stage.
The Osiris Trio and RF3 team up!
For the Tivoli Vredenburg festival in Utrecht, we were invited to make a program combining a 'classical' piano trio and my jazztrio to perform together onstage. Our debut was June 13th at the festival, playing pieces from each other's repertoire (where we improvised with Shostakovich) and l composed some works that we played together too. We hope to be back at festivals and some venues with this exchange next season.
a 6 minute short video of this concert
showcasing the fortepiano at Classical:Next
Classical:Next is a festival for classical music that was held in Vienna, but now moved to Rotterdam. The festival hosts concerts, panels, discussions and more. With my project the Contemporary Fortepiano we were invited to play a showcase concert on the international night. We played our amalgam of Bach, contemporary music and middle eastern music using the fortepiano, violone and whisperkit. We hope to be playing soon in the Baltic States, Sweden, Italy and the UK.
recording new album with Jim black and Hermine
Hermine had the great idea to enhance our duo with the unique drumming of Jim Black: one of the hippest drummers from New York. We recorded some eight tunes and will release the album later in 2015 or beginning on 2016. keep an eye on the agenda to come see us live somewhere.
Bach's Cello suites at the Cello festival
yes, that was quite excting: imagine a hall full of cellists and cello-lovers and the Rembrandt Frerichs trio showing up with just piano, double bass and drums, to give our version of some of the Cello suites of J.S. Bach. Playing Bach's music is always a privilege and for us, this unique moment with so many good ears in the house is something we will not easy forget.
New Norwegian friend: Tor Haugerud
Hermine Deurloo, Hollands-hippest-harmonica player and l went on tour to Norway, to play at the Trondheim Jazz festival. For the occasion we were invited to play together with one of Norway's leading drummers: Tor Haugerud. It turned out te be a very nice first encounter with him, creating a fresh sound and nice flow together on some European Jazz.
Debut of project with Liza Ferschtman.
May 1st was an exciting day, both for the Rembrandt Frerichs Trio and for Liza as we both went far out of our comfortzones: we played two sets, the first set on the historic instruments, playing a Bach estafette and middle eastern music, the second set on Steinway and jazz instruments, playing mostly my original compositions. We've liked working with Liza so much, that we'll be back for my carte blanche at Tivoli Vredenburg in March 2016 and for November Music 2016.
it's never too late...for Kuwait.
Having travelled in the Arabic world quite a bit in the past, l was happy to go on tour to Kuwait: a place l had never yet been. The GulfJazz festival turned out to be a great venue hosted in the replica of an old ship. Playing there for both the Kuwaiti's and the international audience was great. Hope to be back sometime soon again.
at DUTCH NATIONAL TV, interview and playing.
Dutch TV has a new program for classical music, where we were invited to come play and do an interview. Paul Witteman talked with me about the Fortepiano project and two months later l was back playing my composition "carrousel" together with the Amstel Saxophone quartet and Klaartje van Veldhoven. See video's to see some of the broadcast content.
a 'REMBRANDT FESTIVAL' at de Doelen concerthalls
Friday february 15th featured a 'Rembrandt festival': a one-day festival around my music and the projects that l have been doing lately at the concerthalls of the Doelen, Rotterdam. For this occasion l was lucky to invite inspriring musicians around me, to build a program based on three musical pillars: classical music, worldmusic and Jazz. For the classical part, l have been composing for and playing with the lovely and talented Klaartje van Veldhoven (soprano) and the four saxes of the Amstel Quartet. the worldmusic part featured again mr. Kayhan Kalhor from Iran and for the jazzpart we've been playing with the Rembrandt Frerichs Trio.
Concert at the BIMHUIS
The Bimhuis is one of the most prominent venues for jazz and improvised music in the world. Artists such as Brad Mehldau, John Scofield, Joshua Redman and Archie Shepp appeared on the stage early in their careers and to this day the Bimhuis keeps supporting remarkable new talents. Presenting around 300 concerts every year the Bimhuis gives priority to adventurous programming and high artistic quality. We are happy to be back for a concert with the Rembrandt Frerichs Trio on December 27th. Reservations can be made here.
Artist in residence at concerthall Leiden.
in 2015 l will be artist-in-residence at the concerthall of Leiden. A great honour and wonderful opportunity to create some music together with musicians that l find inspiring. l will do a series of three concerts, in January, February and March. The Rembrandt Frerichs will be teaming up with Violinist Liza Ferschtman
, solo bassist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra- Dominic Seldis
and harpist Remy van Kesteren
. These last months we have been rehearsing and l have been busy composing for these "out of the comfortzone" concerts. l'm sure it will be great to play together. See here
more details about the concerts and how to reserve your tickets.
Back in belgium.
This year l have been invited to go south a number of times. With Belgium having some very nice concert venues it's a real pleasure to be playing in Berlgium a bit more. Just recently we closed the "Dutch Jazz Nights" at the Jazzstation in Brussels. Before that l was cooperating with classical singer Wilfried van den Brande and TV and radio host Kurt van Eeghem in Brussels too. This december month l'll be playing a solo piano concert at the Handelsbeurs in Gent. in 2015 we'll be back in Gent for a concert at the Cristofori museum at 15 March and at the Handelsbeurs (again!) with the Rembrandt Frerichs Trio.
Opium radio and TV
Opium radio and TV is a bulletin on the arts. Every week artists are invited to come discuss their work. This month they asked me to come talk about the research l'm doing in classical music and creating new things with it and we also talked about the fortepiano a bit. Here are some excerpts of this broadcast: This
is me playing my original composition "a long story short". This
is a short interview (in Dutch only, sorry!) and this
is me improvising with the notes Bach writes in BWV899.
Dominic Seldis, the "lionel messi" of the bass
Our karma for classical musicians seems to be great this year; after rehearsing with Liza Ferschtman we also had in our rehearsal room Dominic Seldis, solo bassist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. With many of my original compositions being written with the bowed bass in mind, and our bassist Tony doing a great job at this, it was mesmerizing to hear Dominic's sound and ideas on this new music. We've been playing in Leiden. See the video of that concert here
Rehearsing with Liza Ferschtman
We are very happy to be playing together with Liza Ferschtman. Such a unique sound and personality she has! it's very inspirational for me as a composer to write new material for our project together with her. Liza will be improvising together with us and we'll be playing some Bach. Vinsent will be playing some duo stuff with her on Luciano Berio's music and now l'm busy composing more material for this challenging encouter with une of Europe's leading violinists. See the concerts page for the dates...
Giving a lecture
On November 15th l'm invited to give a lecture
for colleague pianists about my adventures in finding new directions of piano playing. As you might know, being inspired by non-western instruments like the santur and the qanun, l'm happy to share with my friends how l made techniques from these musical traditions playable on the piano. Besides this, l hope to shine a light on how pianist from any level can maintain their inspiration by listening to music where the piano does not play a part and thus coming up with artistic solutions themselves for improvisation. l hope to invite the audience to get out of their comfort zone.
Levantasy working on second album
Our oboist Yoram Lachish the last two years was a bit busy with the Avishai Cohen trio and strings project, playing around the globe...But now with us he's back with new Levantasy
adventures. We will be playing one concert in Arnhem on November 11th and in June we'll be recording a new album; fresh new music composed by the group where the oboe and English horn are brought into a new context.
Touring with Fortepiano
This week we are playing a tour of five concerts in some of Holland's most beautiful concerthalls with our project 'the contemporary fortepiano'. A new fortepiano was built especially for me, with many thanks to the Dutch national musical instruments fund who has given instrument builder Chris Maene the assignment to built it. This week we are playing our mix of Classical music, my own contemporary pieces and Middle Eastern music in Zwolle, Den Bosch, Delft and Utrecht. Check out more info about our project here
Now teaching at the Utrecht Conservatory.
Starting in September 2014 l will be teaching jazzpiano at the Utrecht conservatory together with colleague Bert van den Brink. The school has a great and very dynamic pianosection and l'm happy and proud to be a part of this creative team of teachers at the Utrecht university for the arts. There are some nice workshops and masterclasses coming up, so keep an eye on the website
of the conservatory.
Guus Janssen & Rembrandt
In Amsterdam they have a yearly Piano duo festival. For this edition the organisation asked me which colleague l would like to share the stage with. l couldn't have chosen a more interesting pianist than Guus Janssen. We did not rehearse and as we never met before, we literally shaked hands for the first time five minutes before going on stage. There will be a video soon on Dutch TV channel "Brava classics"
sold out concert in Italy
In the beginning of September I was in Italy, playing in Trento in a beautiful concert hall there in duo with harmonica player Hermine Deurloo.
It was some years ago already since l was on tour with Fabio Zeppetella in Italy. so it was a joy to be back. The hall was sold out and the very warm reactions makes me want to play in Italy more often. The new album is out in Italy too, so with the trio we hope to be back soon. See here
a video of the duo with Hermine.
Curator at Prinsjesdag Festival
With my hometown of the Hague being the governmental capital of the Netherlands, we always on the third tuesday of September have the spectacle of the king driving 'round town with a golden coach. On this day The Hague is full of festivities. One new festival is the Prinsjesbal, where the organization has asked me to be their 'curator'. On September 13th the Rembrandt Frerichs Trio will be performing with Limburg artists Bert Lochs (trumpet) and Ad Colen (saxophone) with a special program for that night combining original compositions of all the group members. We hope to be back later this season in the province of Limburg with a follow-up of this project.
Carte blanche musikbiennale Germany
In the border region between the Netherlands and Germany, every two years they host the 'musikbiennale'. l'm happy to be invited to come play a concert in the old church of Kempen. Theme for this edition is "steams, or rivers". We will be teaming up again with Norwegian accordeon player Frode Haltli and specially for this concert the drumseat will be taken by Etienne Nillesen a drummer l enjoy playing with very much. One long set of free improv's leading to some of my new compositions as well as Frode's will result in a long stream of music (we hope....)
Grachtenfestival with Remy van Kesteren
This year's artist-in-residence at the Grachtenfestival was harpist Remy van Kesteren, an inspiring colleague who with his classical background is into new adventures. We were happy with the Rembrandt Frerichs Trio to be teaming up with him. Also this was the start of a collaboration, as for my own artist-in-residency at the concerthalls of Leiden, we will be playing again on January 8th 2015. See some video of the concert here
MA Festival Brugge
This summer we made our entrance at the MA festival: a festival dedicated to early music (like baroque music and before, Bach and all of that). the concept of our concert was: 'the future sound of early music.' On this festival we've made a contrast between actually playing Bach's notes and our improvisations and my own original pieces with my project the Contemporary Fortepiano. l totally love the mix of my 1790 walter-fortepiano with Tony's Violone (precirsor of the acoustic bass) Two Belgian camera teams came, one of the VRT and one of Focus TV. Video from this concert you can see here
talk about music in VPRO magazine (Dutch TV broadcaster)
For VPRO magazine l had a talk about music at my attick studio with a writer about music that l respect very much: Martin Kaaij. He wrote some great books
about classical music. VPRO's program 'vrije geluiden' is broadcasting recordings
from our concert at the Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ. The interview
is also put online to read and as mutli-medial as it was, there's also a video
from the interview
june in the united states
In New York state they have a big festival at Rochester City, that draws about 200.000 people audience. l'm thrilled to be playing there with my friends Phaedra Kwant and Arno Nieuwenhuizen. Phaedra is what you could call the European Esperanza (meaning a vocalist/bassist with fresh music) When in the neighbourhood, would be great to see you there, we'll be giving four concerts on june 26 and 27th.
NEW Norwegian collaboration
Having played one concert before with this interesting musician, the Rembrandt Frerichs Trio
is looking forward to making music with Frode Haltli
again. We know Frode (ECM recording artist) as an accordeon phenomenon that brings both his contemporary classical and his scandinavian colours of notes to the bandstand. On festival Jazz In Duketown in Den Bosch we will be playing this sunday, 18:00-20:00 and the Grand Place. Later on, on September 12th we will be performing in Germany with him too.
Accelerando in Athens, our debut in Greece
2014 is the debut for the Rembrandt Frerichs trio in Greece. In Athens they have a great Jazz festival called "Technopolis" which is on the venue of an old gas factory, a wonderful setting for some live music. We were happy to find 2.500 enthusiastic (isn't that originally a greek word?)
music fans. After our concert in Athens we drove through half Greece to the Preveza Jazz festival, for a concert in the harbour.
Brussels Jazz Marathon
With this January having played at the Winterjazz festival in Brussel's Flagey concerthall, The Rembrandt Frerichs Trio was happy to be back in Brussels for the Brussels Jazz Marathon. It's a very nice open air festival, where we played at the Grand Place, with amazing views from the piano chair l can say, see that here.
Usualy with jazzgroups you don't play for audiences of about a thousand people, so thanks Brussels for coming over to hear us.
We'll be back in Belgium soon: August 3rd on the Musica Antigua festival in Brugge.
JOURNEY TO JORDAN and SYRIAN refugeecamps
It's been about 15 years since l was in Jordan last. l then combined a trip between Syria and Jordan, something you wouldn't do in 2014. Knowing that we would be playing three concert in Jordan, we played a benefit concert on UNESCO international Jazzday to raise money to buy instruments for children in the Syrian refugeecamps in Jordan. Besides gviving our three concerts on th Amman Jazzfestival and in some clubs we now will also bring the instruments we'll buy locally to these kids. l'm glad that with our music we can do something very small that lies close to our hearts and is something literally "hands-on" that we can do directly ourselves. Pictures and more details to follow on my FB page.
premiere of the contemporary forte piano
What started out as a very small idea, now after one-and-a-half year of hard work came to it's official premiere. just last month we had the privilege of performing at the big hall of the Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ (Holland's concerthall for 21st century music) with the brandnew project 'the contemporary forte piano'. Besides enjoying to play the Steinway l believe that the forte piano is a very interesting instrument that propells me into a new artistic direction. In daily life not being a classical performer, l see myself challenged to improvise on this instrument with classical music and combine it with my new compositions that l'm writing now. Besides these two angles, l also enjoy very much finally being able to play an instrument that sounds like the Santur, without me having to learn a complete new instrument. Maybe you think it totally sucks, but make up your mind yourself, here are two youtube links to the concert, let me know how you like it!
is us playing Bach, and this
is us playing my original work for forte piano
VRIJE GELUIDEN TV PROGRAM
We are happy to be recording at Dutch TV show VPRO's Vrije Geluiden today. The Rembrandt Frerichs Trio will play a song from the new CD, but this time with a guest: violinist Oene van Geel. (see the broadcast here

Debut in Switzerland
February 2014 marked out our debut in Switzerland. Playing an exclusive concert at Moods in Zurich, we were very happy to present our music there for a nicely filled jazz club. The warm reactions of the audience is inspiring us to come back soon. Having seen some of the amazing festivals they have in Switzerland, like the Cully Jazz Festival and, just across the border in France: the Cosmo Jazz Festival (up in the mountains and on gletsjers (really!, check out some amazing video's here
. We are looking forward to some future collaborations in beautiful Switzerland. The Swiss radio also did a feature about our music on SRF Kultur Radio, which you can hear here
>Check out the video of this concert here
The new CD is out!
We are happy to announce that the new CD we've made, "A Long Story Short" is out now on Challenge Records. After our record Continental, from 2012, l really felt l wanted to make a new album with a different direction. On this album we hope you'll enjoy as much as we do, the advanced poetic rhyhtms that we have absorbed in our travels to Algeria and India. Besides the grand piano, on this recording l also use two different harmoniums: one is a 1850 original German harmonium that our bassist Tony picked up at a secondhand store, and later turned out, another model also to be in the Metropolitan museum in New York. The other harmonium is an instrument l bought in the old city of New Delhi. We are ooking forward to see you on our presentation concerts at the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam on February 7th or otherwise elsewhere this year.
Recording a new trio album
We are happy to hit the studio again with the Rembrandt Frerichs Trio. Besides 12 new compositions of mine, some of them in the poetic rhythms
of 23/8 and 11/8, we will use an 1850 original German mini-Harmonium on this recording, creating 'filmmusic' picturesques sounds. On a fresh version of John Coltrane’s classic jazzpiece “Naima” Bassist Tony Overwater plays melodies on his bowed bass. Our drummer Vinsent also has some new drumsound inventions instore, so stay tuned!
Iranian Inspirations: Kayhan Kalhor
This edition of November Music (a hip Dutch festival for the contemporary arts) gave me a 'carte blanche' and hence the possibilty to work together with an artist who's music l love very much: Iranian kamanche master Kayhan Kalhor. We are now in the process of writing material and getting our sounds together, curious to hear us/ come check out the concert on November 8th in Den Bosch:
Making Music in Madrid
We are very happy to get back to Madrid this Friday. Our debut sometime ago was at the "La noche en Blanco" festival, with festivities throughout the city. A year after that we played at the Madrid Jazz festival and now we will be playing at the Circulo Bellas Artes with the Rembrandt Frerichs Trio, music from our latest CD "Continental"

Ich bin ein Hamburger! ELBjazz
We were very happy to play at the ELBjazz festival in Hamburg; really one of Europe's most charming festivals in beautiful and dynamic harbour locations. we played for a full hall at the Fishauctionshalle, a video of this concert you can see here.
Audio recordings were also made by the NDR (German) Radio and were broadcast throughout Europe, thanks to the EBU
Our trip to Algeria was amazing! such a nice city Algiers is. We had the privilge of playing together with Mohammad Rouane, the Mandola player (a sort of Arabic mandoline from southern Algeria) in the process of playing together we learned new things about the "Chaabi" music of Algeria, very useful new rhythmic input we got from our friends!
