Here are a couple of ensembles that l’m in, and also some great artists l work with!
Besides these ensembles l have some new projects this season as well:

Rembrandt Frerichs quartet

This group recorded their first CD in 2007, directly resulting in a Edison nomination! Their album is called “ Self portrait” and hence they play mostly Rembrandt’s original compositions.
The unique sound and approach of this ensemble is a combination between the very relaxed, velvet Bartitone sax sound of Jan Menu who can play really beautiful lyrical lines and Rembrandt’s explosive and (at times) dynamic and sensitive playing.

Some new elements in this group also include Rembrandt strumming the piano strings with an Albert Heijn ‘BonusKaart”
Another device is the Indian/Pakistani Shrutibox, which they use to get a meditational drone for Jan Menu to play his improvisations over. Drummer Vinsent Planjer is currently taking up some “Dombak” lessons (Iranian hand drum); and the rich ideas he brings in from the beautiful Persian classical music also are used in this group.

In sept 2008 a track from the CD will be featured on the national Jazzpromotion campaign “aangenaam...JAZZ” for which the commission has selected Rembrandt’s piece “ Stil Leven” to be realeased 35.000 times

In August 2007, Self Portrait was ‘ album of the week” on the London Jazz radio

New projects:

Deborah Van Dam(film director) / Rembrandt project (composer)
Together with the great Deborah van dam we’re experimenting with ‘ live film music’; she makes filmsketches to my music; l make musical sketches to her films, and together we improvise on eachother’s work
I am very inspired by deborah’s work; especially checkout her film about Dutch singer Liesbeth list, it’s a beautiful document, great story and wonderfully made.

Haytham Safia
The Israeli/palestinian Aoud player (arabic lute) Haytham Safia recently became a friend of mine! Me having lived in Cairo for two years, and Haytham moving from the Middle east to his new home in Amsterdam, we quite understand eachothers interests and visions.
Together we really improvise in a intuitive way; l learn a lot from Arabic classical music from him.
With lots of respect to eachothers musical background we put together our own music by composing together and merging our ideas. We play in duo and in band ensembles.

Yoram Lachish
Also from Israel, jazzoboist Yoram Lachish and l met during our tour with the European jazz Youth orchestra when  we gave concerts in Brazil and Europe.
Directly Yoram’s great personal and intense sound really struck me, and his complete open and honest approach to the music makes it a joy to play with this great artist! Together we play our own compositions, which we write especially with eachother in mind.

Vincent Frerichs / Bastiaan Sjardin Dance adventures
My brother vincent actually has quite a big recordstore (actual vinyl records) and he and my friend Bas Sjardin are really into the contemporary hip-house and dance music, which is quite interesting for me!

At this moment we compose together by using eachother’s expertise; Vincent and Bas provide me with great rhythmical ideas and very hip synth-sounds, and l work it out more harmonically, some records coming up!
